The world uses two primary measurement systems: the metric system (officially the International System of Units, or SI) and the imperial system. Understanding both — and knowing when each applies — is essential for anyone who works, travels or communicates internationally.

The Metric System

The metric system is used by 195 of the world's 197 countries as the official measurement system. Its defining characteristic is that all units relate to each other by powers of ten: a kilometre is exactly 1,000 metres, a kilogram is exactly 1,000 grams, a litre is exactly 1,000 millilitres. The Decimal vs Binary Problem

In computing, storage capacity was historically measured in powers of two because binary addressing is natural to digital systems. 1 KB was 1,024 bytes (2¹⁰), 1 MB was 1,048,576 bytes (2²⁰), 1 GB was 1,073,741,824 bytes (2³⁰). But hard drive manufacturers adopted decimal definitions (1 KB = 1,000 bytes) to make capacities appear larger.

The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) resolved this in 1998 by defining binary prefixes: kibibyte (KiB = 1,024 bytes), mebibyte (MiB = 1,048,576 bytes), gibibyte (GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). This means a hard drive sold as "1 TB" (1,000,000,000,000 bytes) will appear as approximately 931 GiB in Windows, which reports storage in binary units while labelling them with decimal names.

⚠️ Common Unit Conversion Mistakes

  • Confusing mass and weight: Mass (kilograms) and weight (newtons) are different quantities. On Earth's surface they are proportional, but on the Moon or in space they are not. Most everyday "weight" scales measure mass.
  • UK vs US gallons: The imperial gallon (UK) is 4.54609 litres; the US gallon is 3.78541 litres. Fuel economy figures are not directly comparable between UK MPG and US MPG.
  • UK vs US fluid ounces: 1 UK fluid ounce = 28.4131 mL; 1 US fluid ounce = 29.5735 mL. An 8 fl oz US cup is 236.6 mL, not 240 mL.
  • Confusing metric tonne and US ton: 1 metric tonne = 1,000 kg. 1 US short ton = 907.185 kg. 1 UK long ton = 1,016.05 kg. Specifying which "ton" is meant is critical in shipping and commodities.
  • Temperature: forgetting the offset: Celsius to Fahrenheit requires both multiplication AND addition. Multiplying 20°C by 1.8 gives 36, not 68°F (the correct answer is 20 × 1.8 + 32 = 68°F).
  • Data rate vs data size: Internet speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps); file sizes are in megabytes (MB). 1 byte = 8 bits, so a 100 Mbps connection downloads at 12.5 MB/s in ideal conditions.
  • Nautical miles vs statute miles: 1 nautical mile = 1.15078 statute miles = 1,852 metres. Nautical miles are used in aviation and maritime navigation and are defined by one minute of arc of latitude.
