What Is an Age Calculator?
An age calculator is a free online tool that determines how old you are based on your date of birth and the current date (or any chosen reference date). Instead of doing the mental arithmetic yourself — accounting for months of different lengths, leap years and varying start dates — the calculator does the work in a fraction of a second and displays your exact age in multiple units.
The DailyToolkitPro Age Calculator shows your age broken down into years, months and days, as well as the cumulative totals in weeks and days. Whether you want to know exactly how old you are today, how old you will be on a future birthday, or how many days you have been alive, this tool gives you an accurate answer immediately.
It is particularly useful for filling in official forms (passports, insurance applications, medical records), planning birthday milestones, checking eligibility ages and satisfying natural curiosity.
How Does the Age Calculator Work?
The calculation follows a straightforward three-step process:
- Enter your date of birth — the day, month and year you were born.
- Set the reference date — by default this is today's date, but you can change it to any date you choose.
- Click Calculate Age — the tool subtracts your birth date from the reference date and breaks the difference into years, months and remaining days.
Under the hood, the algorithm carefully handles edge cases such as months with different numbers of days (28, 29, 30 or 31), and it correctly calculates the remaining days when the birth day has not yet occurred in the current month. Leap years are also handled automatically when computing the total number of days lived.
The Calculation Formula
The calculator uses the following logic:
- Subtract birth year from reference year to get a provisional year count.
- Subtract birth month from reference month to get a provisional month count.
- Subtract birth day from reference day to get remaining days. If the result is negative, borrow days from the previous month.
- If the month count is negative, borrow 12 months from the year count.
- Multiply total elapsed milliseconds by 1/86,400,000 to get total days, then divide by 7 for weeks.

Leap Years and Age Calculation
A leap year occurs every four years and adds an extra day — 29 February — to the calendar. This keeps our calendar aligned with Earth's orbit around the Sun. The rules for leap years are:
- A year divisible by 4 is a leap year (e.g. 2024, 2028).
- However, century years (divisible by 100) are NOT leap years — unless they are also divisible by 400 (e.g. 2000 was a leap year; 1900 was not).
Leap years affect age calculations primarily in two ways:
Birthdays on 29 February
People born on 29 February celebrate their calendar birthday only once every four years. In non-leap years, their birthday is conventionally observed on either 28 February or 1 March, depending on local custom. Our calculator correctly identifies these cases and computes the year count accurately.
Total Days Count
When the calculator displays your total number of days lived, it counts every day including all leap days that have occurred since your birth. This makes the total days figure slightly higher for people who have lived through more leap years.
Age Calculation Examples
The table below shows what the Age Calculator would display for several example birth dates, calculated as of 1 January 2025:
